Leadership. It is something every team needs. Every team needs someone on the field to get a team fired up. To pick them up when things go down. Indianapolis has it with Peyton Manning. October 2, 2008With a quarter of the season over for most of the teams in the NFL we are starting to see the trends form as to who is headed where in the league. I like to track the production of each NFL team based on how effective they are against their level of competition. It gives a good idea of how teams are actually performing and which squads are often getting by on a soft schedule and which teams are truly hard luck teams in the NFL. I’ll post these every 4 weeks and will put the rankings for all the teams in a table for the next breakdown, which is usually much more accurate after 8 weeks than the current 4 week period.
September 29, 2008That's Why You Get Brett Favre
Jets 56 Cardinals 35. Read that again. 56 points. 6 touchdowns through the air, most of which came from outside the red zone. That is why the team obtained the services of Brett Favre. What was witnessed on Sunday was something special for the fans of the New York Jets. Forget the turnovers. Forget the fact that this was the Cardinals. This was the kind of QB play that the Jets have only dreamed of since that fateful day in 1999 when Vinny Testeverde went down...

August 10, 2008Creating More Cap Space in 2008
Here is a question that seems to be popping up alongside the excitement about Brett Favre every now and again: Just where does the Favre signing leave us capwise and what does that mean for the team? Signing Favre has pretty much eaten away at the teams cap space for as long as they decide to keep him on the team or he decides to continue as quarterback of the New York Jets. The Jets have no wiggle room in 2008 and even less in 2009 as the team is committed to paying Favre 25 million dollars over those two years.
August 7, 2008The Jets have capped off what has been a fantastic and expensive offseason. The final piece of the puzzle arrived around 1:30 AM on August 7th when the Jets finalized a deal that made first ballot HOF’er Brett Favre the quarterback of the New York Jets. With the addition of Favre to go along with Alan Faneca, Damien Woody, Kris Jenkins, and Calvin Pace this is arguably the most talented team on paper that the Jets have fielded since 1999,
July 30, 2008Estimating Vernon Gholston's Contract
The league finally released some details on the Vernon Gholston contract today. Gholston will earn base salaries of $295,000, $2,900,000, $3,480,000. $4,060,000, and $4,640,000 in each year of his contract. We already knew he had signed a deal worth a realistic value of 32.5 million dollars with a potential to reach 50 million dollars if he hits every incentive in the contract. Using these figures we can put together an educated guess as to what type of cap hits Gholston is going to have for the New York Jets.
July 23, 2008Camp Countdown '08: Special Teams
What looked to be a somewhat interesting situation in May has pretty much already sorted itself out before camp even begins. The steady long snapper James Dearth was rumored to be injured and contemplating retirement, rumors that were given some credibility by the Jets signing long snapper Nick Jarvis out of Wake Forest. Dearth has been a fixture on the Jets since 2001 and is one of the best at his job.
July 23, 2008The Jets made sure to get their star safety Kerry Rhodes locked up for the foreseeable future during the offseason. Rhodes is the best player on the Jets defense providing a triple threat on defense as a pass rusher, run stopper, and coverage specialist. He had a slow start in 2007 and will need to have a bigger impact early on while the new pieces get acquainted to the defense. He is the one player the team can count on to have a chance to make game changing plays every week.
July 20, 2008Camp Countdown '08: Cornerbacks
The one guarantee among Jets corners is that second year player Darrelle Revis has won the number one position for the next few years based on his rookie play. Revis had a solid rookie campaign often limiting top number 1 Wr’s to just a handful of looks a week and proving to be an outstanding tackler.
July 20, 2008Camp Countdown '08: Linebackers
The Jets were extremely active in the 2008 offseason addressing what was the most disappointing unit on the defense in 2007. Gone are former starters Jonathan Vilma and Victor Hobson, while the remaining veterans, Bryan Thomas and David Bowens, will likely see their minutes reduced in favor of Calvin Pace, who the Jets broke the bank to bring in via free agency, and the number 6 overall pick in the draft, Vernon Gholston. It will be a fascinating battle between Gholston and Thomas in training camp.
July 16, 2008Camp Countdown '08: Defensive Line
The weakest part of the Jets defense remains up front with suspect starting defensive ends and a nose tackle playing the position for the first time in his career. The starting 3 may hold the key to the Jets defensive success being called upon to occupy enough offensive linemen to allow their linebackers to make plays on the football, something the team has not done consistently for 2 years. The Jets traded for NT Kris Jenkins in the offseason to replace the traded DeWayne Robertson and hope he is the missing piece to the puzzle. Jenkins has great size and is a devastating player when healthy and in shape.
July 15, 2008Camp Countdown '08: Offensive Line
There looks to be little drama in determining who will start for the team come week 1. Nick Mangold, Alan Faneca, and D’Brickashaw Ferguson are all locked in to their starting positions and Damien Woody will start at one of the two positions on the right side of the line. Faneca was the Jets prize offseason acquisition to solidify the left side of the line and hopefully make life easier for the still learning Ferguson. If Ferguson, who plays borderline excellent at times, doesn't become more consistent this year the team is going to start to hear whispers about his selection in the 2006 draft.
July 13, 2008Camp Countdown '08: Tight Ends
This looks to be a 3 man battle for 1 or 2 starting positions in 2008. Chris Baker, the incumbent starter, is a decent talent. He does nothing exceptional, but suits up every week and provides a steady option to the team. Baker is complaining about his contract and could hold himself out of camp. Bubba Franks was signed as a one year reclamation project.
July 12, 2008Camp Countdown '08: Wide Receivers
While Laveranues Coles may still get the designation as the Jets top receiving option, he is really a number 2 WR at this stage and an injury concern. Coles in coming off a disastrous year with a career low 55 receptions and multiple injuries that forced him to miss games for the first time in his career. The Jets either need Coles to find the fountain of youth and catch close to 90 passes or they have to find another viable option in the passing game besides Jerricho Cotchery.
July 2, 2008There is very little intrigue at the top of the depth chart. Jones is firmly entrenched as the starter based on the deal he signed in 2007 and it is very unlikely that anyone mounts a battle to unseat him. At Fullback, the Jets feel as if they finally have an answer at the position with the addition of veteran Tony Richardson, a terrific blocker whose career is winding down.
June 29, 2008Camp Countdown '08: Quarterbacks
All eyes in the summer will likely be focused on the training camp battle for the starting job as quarterback of the 2008 New York Jets between Chad Pennington and Kellen Clemens. Pennington brings experience to the table, but has physical limitations that are hard to overcome. Pennington proved beyond a shadow of a doubt in 2007 that he does not have the physical ability to win a game with time winding down, making costly mistakes in crunch time that cost him his starting job.
May 6, 2008A Closer Look at Chris Baker's Contract Situation
The relationship between New York Jets starting Tight End Chris Baker and the organization has gotten ugly. The rift seemingly began when unnamed players began commenting on the free agent spending spree the Jets embarked on in the opening days of free agency giving huge deals to Kris Jenkins, Alan Faneca, Calvin Pace and Damien Woody. “You pay guys you don’t even know, and the guys in the locker room- the guys that have your back- you don’t give a damn about them”

April 19, 2008Analyzing The Performance of the Selections 11-32 in the NFL Draft from 1997 thru 2006
While the commitment financially is typically not as extreme between a top 10 player and the remainder of the first round selections, you still are making at least a 3 to 4 year financial commitment to a first round player and are going to do everything in your power to get that player onto the field and have him contribute right away. Like in the top 10 there are a handful of positions which stand out as ' safe picks for a team. Centers and Guards, Tight Ends, Linebackers, Safeties, and Defensive Ends have produced more useful players than busts from picks 11 thru the end of the first round.
April 13, 2008Analyzing The Performance of the Top 10 Selections in the NFL Draft from 1997 thru 2006
If you are fortunate (or some might say unfortunate) enough to be picking in the top 10 of the NFL Draft you have the opportunity to often grab a franchise changing player. NFL General Managers and head coaches jobs often come down to how well the player they select in the top 10 perform. If you end up with Peyton Manning you look like a genius. If you end up selecting Tim Couch you will lose your job.
